Pinwheel Flower (May)

May’s project in the BOBBOL 2013 Series

BOBBOL 2013 is the nickname for Bits of Beads/Bits of Lace, and expands the popular Bits of Lace 2012 Series with additional types of small lace projects and the addition of projects for building skills in beading.

For May, we knitted Pinwheel Flower Doily. Bring a little bit of knitting art into your kitchen, bath, or dining entertainment. Make this practical, small piece of flower-inspired “art” that you can use as a facecloth, tabletop coaster/doily, or stylish kitchen dishcloth.

Boudoir Gift Basket with Pinwheel Flower Facecloth

This month’s project highlights techniques for

  • an easy (cheating?) center start for double point needles
  • the crochet chain bind off frequently used for lace doilies

In an extra bonus Tips & Techniques article later in the month, I also provide instructions for the knitted version of the crochet chain bind off.

If you missed the knit-along for Pinwheel Flower, you can purchase the pattern now and still take advantage of free support articles for making this project.

I’m sorry but the free offer is for download only. Please check the “Help” item in the menu at this site. Cannot send email free patterns as I am traveling and will not go through with large files. (that is why I put them up on the server so that members like you can download them) It’s likely your computer is blocking the download, so please use the suggestions in the Help topics to allow the download. Hope this helps.

Jackie, thank you for sharing this beautiful pattern:)

  9. Nellie says:

Lovely pattern. I used Emily Oeker’s cast on for the beginning. I also used 2 circulars to knit mine.

I am having a bit of trouble deciphering the bind off. Do you mean to yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook? I cannot wrap my brain around “sc them together”…

    I hope to block shortly…

    • jackiees says:

When you slide the 2 sts to the crochet hook, you are to treat those 2 loops as though they were one. Then proceed making a sc as usual (there’s not a lot of difference if you use the US or the UK definition — I didn’t want to complicate matters by getting into that since this is not a crochet class). It will be easier to “see” what is to be done you are actually doing this, rather than trying to visualize it in your head.

Thank you for this pattern. Such a pretty little cloth.I am going to make it in 20 crochet cotton and add some beads to the edges and use them for a covers on my sugar bowl and milk jug. It`s just so sweet.

  11. Eileen says:

This is very pretty. I’m looking forward to making it. Maybe several. Hope you’re having a Happy Mother’s Day.

  12. Rita Scroggs says:

I’m fearful on the cast-on when it says, “Beginning with the cast-on st the furthest…. pull tail through lower loop.” I hope when I attempt this pattern it will make more sense to me. Any advice or photo clips available to show the steps?

    • jackiees says:

There will be a photo tutorial as soon as I get to it. 🙂

But yes, when you have your actual stitches and knitting needles in hands, it will make more sense. Try it now and you might surprise yourself how easy it is.

  13. Gail says:

Jackie, this was a delightful knit. Thank you for this pattern. It is absolutely lovely. I love you your method of circular knitting start. I have had so much trouble in the past with other methods on DPNs. I also really love the crochet bind-off, I have been crocheting for most of my life and only knitting for a short time and never thought that the two could be so seamlessly combined. I must admit, my short metal DPNs were just not comfortable after row 10, I moved to my bamboo circulars and went for the magic loop method in order to retain the yos that make the lovely lace in the pattern.
God bless you. Thank you again for a wonderful KAL.

  14. Maureen Mitchell says:

Made this in one sitting while watching tv tonight. It is adorable, and I learned to use DPNs. (My first try was with metal DPNs and they kept flying across the room. I used bamboo this time and I liked them much better. Progress! Thanks for this lovely design!
